Traveling to Portland anytime this year? Stay in accommodations that are as out of the norm as they are out of this world, at Jupiter Hotel.

By Jason Dorn

There is something fun and campy about a Motorlodge. The smell of desperate family vacations, wood paneled station wagons with too many miles and screaming kids. Well, forget the station wagon, and imagine a Motorlodge gone hip and retro, filled with live bands, hipsters, gays and chalk. Set it down in Portland, Oregon and you’ve got the ultimate hotel with the ‘it factor.’ This is certainly not the Griswold’s Motorlodge.

Welcome to the Jupiter Hotel, located just across the Broadway Bridge from downtown Portland, but is actually walk-able to downtown for those that don’t mind a nice stroll (when there isn’t a torrential downpour like when we did it…and thanks to wind gusts, the Willamette river now has an extra umbrella in it!)

The hotel is an old Motorlodge that has shaken off its stale façade, without much actual renovation. A few coats of paint (including chalkboard paint), some low profile beds with fabulous sheets, flat screen televisions and a mobile tent with chandeliers to host bands and cocktails.

We checked in to the Jupiter to a super friendly hipster, who raved about the hotel Manager, the owners, and how much he loved his job and the guests that have stayed at the property. He’s apparently been there since it became the Jupiter and said the staff is a close knit ‘family,’ something I can appreciate in any job, especially in the hospitality business.

Our room was cute, not much to it, except that it was clean, and dare I say, sassy? It was a small room, but the low profile beds, and wall mirror made it seem much larger than it was. Of course, it didn’t take long for us to find the cup full of chalk to write your own message on the front door of the hotel, which is covered in chalkboard paint…PERFECT for those nights when you’ve had a little much to drink (or might be open for company?) We were also pleased with the bathroom’s bar of soap with the center cut out (like a donut) to keep green and not waste so much product!

The condom v. earplugs on the nightstand was perfectly and equally matched by “The Velvet Devil” (red) and the “Eve” (white) bottles of wine in the room. Your night could be anything you make it.

Due to the rain, we were unable to really check out the outdoor pool area, and although there were no less than four bands staying at the hotel, we weren’t privy to any private concerts under the tent, but both areas looked very inviting, and I can imagine coming back in June and really taking advantage. There is also the bar area, referred to as ‘The Lodge,’ but we were there during a football playoff game, so most eyes were on that. Those eyes may have been focused on the game, but belonged to some really cute patrons, both gay and straight. Apparently these Portland gays enjoy sports, drinks, live music and are cute to boot!

The hotel is hip, the staff is cool, and the vibe is spot on. Would I stay here again… Hell Yes! With as many of the ‘fancy/chain hotels’ I have stayed at, I really enjoyed this one, and am looking forward to going back and spending a weekend there in the future.

So, you find yourself stuck in Hong Kong on a layover and you’re not really sure how to tackle the mega city? Well here’s an idea or two to get you through.

By Bryce Hartley

First off, a brief background on the territory for a bit of context to make your layover as fabulous and informative as possible. Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) and part of the People’s Republic of China – not to be confused with the Republic of China (Taiwan) – and is one of the only SARs in the world, with the other being Macau. The official languages of Hong Kong are Chinese (with Cantonese being the prevalent dialect spoken) and English, which makes communication fairly easy. Hong Kong Dollars are accepted as the main currency, though more and more places also accept Chinese Renminbi. Visa free entry is possible for most of Europe and North America, making immigration far less complicated than Mainland China.

A Real Quickie

Sometimes all you have time for is a quickie, and Hong Kong is just the place for that! With very limited time, the fastest option from the airport into the city centre is to take the airport express which will get you to Central in about 20 minuets and costs 100HKD (12USD). Once at Hong Kong station the best thing to do is simply wander around central and take in the sights that are uniquely Hong Kong. Imagine Manhattan on steroids in Hawaii. After you’ve taken in your fill of the skyscrapers, hop on bus 15C near the Star Ferry Pier to get to the Peak Tram. Being the first form of public transportation in Hong Kong, the tram is a sight in and of itself and will take you to the Peak, which offers breathtaking views of the Hong Kong skyline.

If you still have the energy, the Big Buddha statue in Lantau Island is a must see while in Hong Kong. From Central, you can take the MTR to Tung Chung station and once outside, follow the signs for the cable car to Ngong Ping. The cable car will take about 25 minuets and gives you the chance to see a greener, more natural side of Hong Kong. Once in Ngong Ping you can choose to hike up the steps to the statue, getting your money’s worth with a two in one workout/cultural experience. After that you can take the cable car or a taxi back to the MTR. Getting to the airport is very simple; just take MTR two stops to Tsing Yi station where you can then change to the airport express.

A Tad Longer

Now for the good part! Assuming you have a little more time in Hong Kong (24 hours or more) there is even more you can see and do. As much as we all love sightseeing while the sun is up, the nightlife of Hong Kong is not to be missed!

The must go to venue in Hong Kong is Lan Kwai Fong (LKF), which is arguably the heart of the bar and club scene in HK. This is not a bar exclusive to gays, but worth going to simply for the experience. Hop in a taxi and rest assured that every driver knows Lan Kwai Fong, or you can take the MTR to Central station and use exit D2. You will likely hear LKF before you see it because there is as much going on in the streets surrounding the club as there is inside. Unlike other parts of the world, open containers are legal in HK and you will see many people taking advantage of this in LKF.

Once you’ve absorbed the chaos of LKF, it’s time to check out the vibrant gay scene HK has to offer. While there are many bars and saunas throughout the city, the most famous of all is Propaganda (PP). However, finding it is no easy feat, so read closely!

The official address is B/F 1 Hollywood Rd, which is good to keep in mind but you’ll need much more to actually find your way.

From LKF walk up until you get to Wyndham St and then turn right and continue straight until it becomes Hollywood Road (about 5 mins).

Once at the intersection of Hollywood Road and Pottinger Street, there is a set of big stone stairs. Go down those stairs and immediately turn left at the first alley.

The alley is very small, about 10 feet wide and not very tall. Go down this alley and you’ll see Propaganda on your left!

On a Friday or Saturday night PP is packed, but the action doesn’t start till after midnight and stays open till 5AM. Expect to pay 180HKD, which will get you in the door and one free drink. Although quite expensive, Propaganda is the gay club of Hong Kong and not something you want to miss out on. Inside, you’ll find the club is divided into a bar area and a dance area. Generally, the bar area is more relaxed and the dance is more crazy, complete with two stripper poles to dance on. If you party late enough you can catch the first train to the airport, which leaves at 5:30AM!

Enjoy your time in Hong Kong, and don’t worry if you miss your flight. HK is a great place to live too!

Want to do something out of the ordinary on your next week long trip to New York City? How about joining a Gay Swim Team for some fit fun while you frolic through the Big Apple.

By Michael Martin

It’s a dreary day in late January, and I’m dreading my assignment. It’s cold, and I’m not feeling 100%, and I have to cover a gay swim team. While that might sound sexy, at first thought – I was on swim team in high school, and I know how sexy a swim meet isn’t. Compared to a sport like football or soccer, where teams of people battle it out in real time against each other, a solitary sport like swimming can seem, well… kinda boring. I mean, once you get over the tight suits…

But the atmosphere is anything but boring at John Jay College’s pool. People are all smiles, and it seems I’ve walked into a party. Everyone is social – beaming at one another and encouraging each other to do well with the day’s task. I’ve come on a very special day. I’ve stumbled into the 22nd annual One Hour Swim, in which teams from all over the country put swimmers in the water for a full hour, pushing them to swim as hard as they can. The goal is to see who can swim the farthest.

Liz Gately, who is registering the swimmers, tells me that Team New York Aquatic (TNYA) takes this annual meet one step further. They use it as a charity fundraiser every year – sort of like the AIDS Walk or other such events. The first time they did it was a few decades ago and it was for one of their own team mates. He was stricken with the AIDS virus and needed help with his medical bills. TNYA stepped in and helped him out. Since that first year they’ve picked different charities to donate to. This year they’re donating to The AIDS Service Center NYC, and Immigration Equality – the only national organization devoted to the intersection of immigration rights with the lives of LGBT and HIV-positive people.

I know, I’m not making it sound like a big party, but somehow it was! The timers were talking and laughing with one another. The registration people were all cheerful and buoyant – chatting each other up between registering athletes to compete. There was even a massage table, and a snack bar – donated by local businesses.

Most of the lanes contain people swimming as far as they can for the hour. However, in the far left lane is a particularly high spirited (and attractive) group of swimmers taking turns swimming two laps each. “We’re doing our hour swim as a relay,” explains the very fetching Kent Lau. “In the last 10 years, the number of LGBT competitive sports teams have exploded. We’re doing this event partly for fun, and partly to ease some of the newer swimmers into the idea of the One Hour Swim.” Kent goes on to explain that TNYA even has a social events coordinator, who hosts a huge swim meet that draws athletes from across the country. It’s an all day event, with swimming, diving, dinner and even dancing afterward. “We have 200 people participate. It’s a real community.”

Indeed, they employ a full-time head coach, a hearty man named Conrad Johnson, who claims he fell into coaching by accident. While that might be the case, he’s been with TNYA since 2005 – overseeing 4 pools with overlapping practices, and 400 swimmers on the mailing list.

“It’s like being the head of a diverse country,” he says, “all walks of life, all ages, all nationalities – all sexual orientations.” Sexual orientations? Yes. Apparently Conrad took some of his female swimmers with him when he left his all lady team to coach TNYA. “Some how, the girls swim team’s energy meshes well with the gay team, and we’re one happy family.”

So it would seem. I got a chance to talk to one of the older swimmers about the social aspects of being on the team. Danny Rosemarin, 57, speaks very highly of his ten years on the team.

“It’s done a significant amount for my self esteem. I can out-swim other swimmers in their 30s and 40s and that’s a clear indication that I’ve made this commitment and benefited from it.”

Danny’s been on the team for 10 years, and says that it accounts for a big chunk of his social life, too.

TNYA offers the first week of practices free to new members, which is perfect for people visiting New York on a short trip. They also have scholarships for swimmers that show promise that might not otherwise be able to afford to join the team. They frequently swim in worldwide events like the Gay Games.

The time clock has gotten down to the final minute. Suddenly everyone jumps to their feet. They are shouting joyfully at the people in the pool – trying to lend support and give them that final push to end the contest strong. There’s a charge in the air – everything seems fun, exciting.

When the clock shows ten seconds to go, everyone counts down the last few seconds in unison. It sounds like New Years Eve in here, and why not?

These gays have managed to take a run of the mill swim meet and turn it into a party.

http://www.maccjcc.org/film/2012-jewish-film-fest/

The schedule of films this year continues our tradition of presenting the very best of Jewish cinema. Our opening night film, Restoration, winner of the Dramatic Screenwriting Award at Sundance, is a beautifully filmed, character driven story. Like fine antique furniture, this film is full of subtleties that will stay with you long after the film has ended. Dolphin Boy is a compelling, award-winning documentary that takes us on a four year journey following the recovery of a young man suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Nicky’s Family chronicles the life of Sir Nicholas Winton whose heroic work was unknown for 50 years and now inspires thousands to invest themselves in positive actions. Incessant Visions-Letters from an Architect, the illuminating documentary about visionary German Jewish architect, Erich Mendelsohn, brings to life the vibrant work of this extraordinary individual. Travel to pre-WWII Vienna to meet Gustav Mahler as he reveals his tormented soul to Sigmund Freud.

This real life encounter forms the framework for Mahler on the Couch, a delightful film set to the gorgeous strains of Mahler’s music. Take the ingredients of the classic American slasher flick, add more than a touch of camp, and a sly cinematic wink and you get Israel’s first bona fide horror film,Rabies. Wickedly fun! Famed Israeli director, Etyan Fox, brings us Mary Lou, the story of a young man who finds himself while searching for his mother. This musical dramedy, a cross between “Glee,” Mamma Mia, and “Modern Family,” will have you swaying in your seats.

Poised with a luxurious new venue and, as always, offering extraordinary films, we hope you will join us on another cinematic journey that will inspire and enlighten, make us laugh, bring tears to our eyes and above all, bind us through the power of an energizing, shared aesthetic experience.

Denver is fortunate to have many groups of gay men who have come together to create communities. This natural diversity within our community is something to celebrate… something that uplifts and inspires and supports us as gay men. Perhaps you’ve experienced a disconnect with other gay men or maybe you’re looking for new ways to enjoy other men’s company. Whether you’re a younger man or an older man, your participation is valuable. Let’s start a new conversation for community that is uplifting and inspiring. We believe that we can create a context for ourselves and our communities that is enlivening and empowering. ELEMENT is a community-based celebration of our individual and collective strength, our innate wisdom as men who love men, and our capacity for creating deep and meaningful communities of men

By Michael Martin

Once upon a time in 2009, Douglas Quint was on the couch browsing Facebook, alongside his boyfriend, Brian Petroff. Douglas remarked on a friend’s post about an ice cream truck that wasn’t in use. “Should I drive an ice cream truck all summer?” he said, rather cavalierly, to his boyfriend Brian.

“Yes,” replied his boyfriend. “That sounds exactly like what you should be doing!”

Thus, The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck was born. Soon, amid growing customer demand and media accolades the couple found themselves thrust into foodie stardom. Brian quit his job as a corporate HR specialist, and Doug put his career as a freelance concert bassoonist on hold. They had a thriving, booming business.

So much so, in fact, that they were able to open The Big Gay Ice Cream Store on Labor Day weekend of 2011. On opening day they drew a line around the block. Hoards of New Yorkers clamored for access to their colorfully Spartan sweet shop, and the tasty confections within.

“The East Village is the only neighborhood left in Manhattan where you can DIY your own small business,” says Doug, right before he pauses to flirt with a 72 year old woman. The woman
is full of compliments. She ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ over a dish she’s selected called the Bea Arthur (vanilla ice cream, dulce de leche, rolled in crushed Nilla wafers). “Careful,” he says “I might be hitting on you.”

“I’m 72 years old!” the blushing woman announces proudly. Douglas winks and shrugs.

Indeed, the day that I visited them at 125 E. 7th st. in Manhattan’s East Village there was no lack of customers, even though I dropped by in the middle of the afternoon in late January. I could see, too, that there was more to their business philosophy than just soft serve ice cream with foodie-type toppings. Doug and Brian find themselves working behind their own counter most days, and Doug makes a concerted, chipper effort to be friendly and social with his customers. “Ultimately, we’re dishing up soft serve, just like the next guy – so we’re being extremely personable and friendly about it.”

Douglas goes on to explain that he wants his customers to be able to take the kids for ice cream for less than ten bucks. “It’s important to us to be able to offer our customers a product that a five year old can afford.”

Douglas is being humble. BGICS is hardly the same soft serve you can get at any ice cream truck. True, the base flavors are simple – chocolate and vanilla with special made flavors like coffee and beet (yes, beet!!) on weekends. But, like so much of the gay lifestyle – it’s all about how you top it. And these two gays have mastered the art of topping. Er… toppings. You can get your soft serve upgraded with extra goodies like Key Lime Curd, Siracha, Wasabi Pea Dust, Olive Oil and Sea Salt – just to name a few.

There are also toppings and ingredients manufactured solely for BGICS – including a Bacon Marmalade (best with chocolate ice cream) and an ice cream sandwich called Rue McClanahan – bourbon ice cream with praline pecan cookies.

Big Gay Ice Cream Shop achieves quite an accomplishment in the world of New York foodie restaurants. They manage to maintain a complex, interesting menu that is both unique and down to earth at the same time.

So yeah, if you want a beet ice cream cone with pumpkin butter and a dusting of cardamom, you can have it. But if your date is more vanilla – and just wants a cone with a chocolate dip?

Well, then – you can both leave with your bellies full.

Rupert Street Bar and Cafe is the Cheers of London – where everyone knows your name – or at least may very well want to by the end of the night.

Located near where SoHo meets Chinatown in London’s gay nightlife district, Rupert’s is always a good stop to make upon arrival. The nearest tube stop is Piccadilly Circus, located just a few blocks away.

It was the first place we went after leaving our hotel, and served as a great meeting spot for friends throughout our trip due to its central location and infamous reputation. We arrived there in the afternoon, when the bar and lounge area were still calm and nearly empty. We were greeted by a very attractive bartender, who took his time to flirt and welcome us to his city.

The other reason this is a great first stop is the plethora of London LGBT magazines and event listings they have available for patrons inside the bar. Pick up a copy and find out what’s going on in the LGBT scene that week throughout the city. The bartenders are also knowledgable about parties and shindigs, and are more than happy to direct you elsewhere should you be looking for something later on down the road.

Reviews around the web will make mention of the attractiveness of the staff – always a good staple to rely upon when you can’t make any promises concerning the caliber of the clientele. Some of these same reviews will also make note of the poor service from said attractive bartenders, but we didn’t experience anything but prompt attention and friendly attentiveness from them. They gave us a WiFi password, bootlegged from a nearby establishment when we asked, which allowed us to catch up on our internet duties after touching down, and were warm and welcoming each time we came in.

Rupert’s is open everyday of the week, transforming from a relaxed daytime drink and grub spot to a vivacious nightlife local after sunset. The clientele was, indeed, attractive and varied, flirtatious and keen to socialize, and willing to make new friends.

A person can eat day or night for under 10 pounds a person, with food such as burgers, fries, mac and cheese, and more to offer. Drinks ranged from a healthy selection of beers (complete with foam decorations should you choose a frothy brew. Two Guinnesses got us a penis picture and boobs built into our drinks.) Cocktail prices were average with options ranging from cosmos, mules, mojitos, vodka redbulls, whiskey and more. Take note however – they’ll make it a double automatically unless you ask them for a single.

The place had a modern look to it, which was a nice departure form the usual hundred year old bar establishments London is known for. The front half has a metal retro feel, while the back lounge area is darker, with plush cushions and couches surrounding tables lit by interesting light fixtures. There are plenty of dark corners to hide in should the place become busy enough – which it’s always sure to do on weekend nights.

Big windows in the front area of the bar allow you to check out the scenery – both from outside and from within. They also speak to Rupert’s history of being one of the first openly gay bars in London to shed their black curtains and say to the city “Here we are – drunk, gay, and proud.”

Smokers and wanders canget a plastic cup to take outside with them so they can continue with uninterrupted drinking while taking a break from the bevy of beauties inside.

All in all, day or night, meetingfriends or looking for new ones, for food or drink, Rupert’s will continue to be this traveler’s first stop shop in London. Pretty soon, maybe everyone there will know my name.

The League City Heritage Foundation is a non-profit 501 © (3) organized 15 years ago for the betterment of League City. Our main benefactors are Clear Creek High School seniors as we give scholarships each year to deserving students. We have also donated park benches to the city, a tree for League Park, money for the YMCA after school program, money for the Butler Longhorn Museum, as well as hosting a free Easter Egg Hunt every spring. This year, in addition to our scholarships, we are raising money for the St. Christopher community garden, scholarship awards to the first senior class graduating from Clear Springs HighSchool, and for Clear View High School’s spring 2010 prom. Clear View is a school for at risk students with low enrollment making it difficult to raise adequate funds for functions of this nature.

It is one of Houston’s signature events and has developed into one of the primary fund-raisers for Child Advocates. With a projected annual attendance of over 50,000 people, the festival celebrates over two decades of proven success for sponsors, the community, participants and most importantly, for Child Advocates and the abused and neglected children it serves.

Profile and LoProfile in London – gay bar, lounge, and house music

If you want to get down low and dirty till the early hours of the morning, LoProfile Club and lounge in SoHo is a viable option. Located close to everywhere else worth going in London’s trendiest gay district, the club is open Mondays, Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm till 4am, perfect for the post-bar, pre-sunrise time span.

Above LoProfile is simply Profile, a more casual bar and lounge where you can relax before the party or catch up with friends before entering the milieu of music below. Both are decorated in a questionably chosen pink and yellow motif, but after enough cocktails, the colors blur and you don’t care anymore.

There was a line to get into LoProfile every night we went, which is annoying at the time, but better to have too many people wanting to get into a place than an empty inside.

The scene is a little British circuit party meets trashed and trashy go go dancers, but it can’t be denied it’s a fun place to lose oneself in for a while. House music is what you’ll find bumping in the air, and a slew of gliterati guys is what you’ll find bumping on the dance floor.

The bathroom situation is worth mentioning. Let’s just say, don’t wait until the last minute to go. Give yourself a solid 10 at least to make it through the line. Signs on the doors of the stalls ask that only one person at a time occupy the space, but it doesn’t always hold up – and what happens in a bathroom stall, better stay in a bathroom stall. There is, however, a slew of colognes in case you need to freshen up your stench before heading back out to the trenches to rub up against some more (probably) shirtless boys.

The club throws a number of regular themed parties like BearTrap – an evening for bears and their friends. Polar bears, panda bears, black bears, brown bears, every kind of bear welcome. Fridays are Playtime, a weekly party which claims to bring the sexiest pornstars within a patron’s reach. Described as a red light district wonderland, host Jay Roberts controls just who gets in to the special playtime bedroom to mingle with the mighty.

One of my complaints with this place was a few of the bartenders were either too drunk to move quickly, didn’t care enough to deliver quality service, or simply didn’t want to help a girl out in a predominately male gay scene. Regardless, expect to wait for a drink like you’ll have waited for the bathrooms or coat check. You’ll have to wait as long for the latter once you’re inside the club as you did to get in in the first place – especially on those cold and rainy London nights when no one, no matter how hot they are, can leave their jackets at home.

Entrance to get in ranges from 5 pounds to upwards of 15 depending on the party.

Abri Gay Hotel – Union Square – San Francisco

I have strangely become a fan of orange. We have the Hotel Abri in San Francisco to thank for that change in attitude towards a color that doesn’t fall onto the rainbow flag.

Hotel Abri is located smack dab in the heart of Union Square and less than a block from the main “Powell Station” for BART and MUNI, the two most convenient modes of transportation for getting around the city (and to and from the airport).

We were pleasantly surprised as we rounded the corner to the hotel to see a proudly displayed Pride Flag directly above the hotels namesake flag.

Check in was a breeze and the nice gentlemen behind the desk welcomed us genuinely to the hotel, didn’t blink at our request for a king size bed and had arranged for us to be upgraded to a corner room! While checking in be sure to take a moment to enjoy one of the complimentary orange ‘shots’ that are offered (as well as a giant orange gum ball). The shots change daily, and the Saturday we checked in we were treated to a vodka and orange energy drink. Much needed for a Saturday night on the town!

The lobby was warm an inviting, and looked like a great space to sit by the fire and participate in one of our favorite past times, people watching. (We wouldn’t have minded watching the two boys that checked in while we were headed to our room either!)

Our room was in a corner on the fourth floor and we were amazed at the generous size of the room when we entered. The bedroom was large enough for a king size bed and a chaise lounge (with obligatory flat screen TV mounted to the wall), a walk through bathroom connecting it to the living area was a nice touch, and we stopped to admire the bathroom. Normally a hotel bathroom doesn’t excite me too much, but the ample L’Occitane bath essentials and the shower stood out. The glass enclosed shower was a dream, nice and large with a rainfall shower head positioned at least 7 feet high, perfect for someone who is 6’4”, and rare to find in a hotel.

The living area was fit for a gathering of friends, or a lazy night in watching the ample flat screen with a large comfortable couch for lounging as well as another lounge chair and a table for cocktails. The mini fridge was empty, and there was a ‘pocket’ in the door that fit our bottle of vodka perfectly! Another nice feature was that the ice came in a pre-packaged plastic bag, perfect for pre-gaming before hitting all the nightlife that San Francisco has to offer. One thing we were amazed about based on the hotels location was the lack of noise. Besides the occasional clattery clack of the cable car, it was rather quiet, and honestly, hearing the cable car just reinforced the fact that you were in the heart of San Francisco.

A few of the nice touches that we enjoyed were the ample availability of outlets throughout the room, the iPod player in the bedroom, and the work-station which had plenty of outlets, free WiFi and included access to the “Tech-Bar”, where you could borrow, or buy such things as a phone charger, iGo Laptop Charger, Compact Power Strip, Mini Speakers, and so much more.

The little orange touches throughout, including the whimsical lava lamp and the bright orange coffee mugs were fun and really played well into the overall theme of the hotel.

The staff was amazing, and quite knowledgeable and able to direct us to a variety of gay bars in both SOMA and in the Castro area that night, and the next morning was sure to point out the fact that Puccini and Pinetti (Link) recently started serving breakfast., and is conveniently located next door.

The only complaint we had about our stay was that we only had one night in this very gay friendly and super comfortable home away from home in San Francisco’s Union Square.
